Intranet SSL Certificate and IP Address SSL Certificate Changes
Business owners who are using the Intranet often think that they don’t need SSL Certificates to protect their network. This can be reasonable because their network is private and there are no third parties that can intercept the transactions being conducted inside an Intranet network.
But there are some business people who think that they should protect their Intranet network from possible attacks even inside their network. That’s why they install SSL Certificates on their Intranet network. Using Intranet SSL Certificate and IP Address SSL Certificate will secure the Intranet network from malicious attacks from third parties who can access the network without proper consent.
This is the reason why many companies that are using an Intranet to transmit information inside their company install an Intranet SSL Certificate or an IP Address SSL Certificate on every web server software that have access on the Intranet network.
Changes to Intranet SSL Certificate and IP Address SSL
But due to the recent industry-wide changes that CA/Browser Forum has implemented, Intranet SSL Certificates are no longer permitted to be issued by Certificate Authorities that will expire a year before October 1, 2016 – the date when all of the Intranet SSL Certificates and IP Address SSL Certificates will be revoked.
This means, parties that still want to use Intranet Certificates can only purchase SSL Certificates that have a contract duration of one to two years only. Three, four and five-year contracts are no longer available on Certificate Authorities.
This decision is based on the new guideline on implementation of SSL Certificates. Starting October 1, 2016, Intranet certificates are no longer permitted and should be revoked.
Alternative Intranet Network Security Measure
Because of the new Intranet SSL Certificate policy, every Certificate Authority cannot issue Intranet Certificates to Intranet network users. Thus, Intranet network users need to find another way to make their Intranet network secure.
Some companies might just create their own internal Certificate Authority and create SSL Certificates of their own. Because of the resources of Intranet network users, this is not impossible to do. This may take a lot of time and resources but if the company really wants to protect their transactions, they will have to make do.
Some Certificate Authorities are already crafting ways on how they can still provide services to Intranet network users without violating their Certification Practice Statement (CPS). Some Certificate Authorities are creating services that will let Intranet network users create their own Intranet SSL Certificates and IP Address Certificates much more easily. This kind of service will provide Intranet network users useful resources to create and implement their own internal SSL Certificates without going through the standard and time-consuming process.
This is quite advantageous both to the part of the Intranet network user and the Certificate Authorities. Intranet network users will still be able to use internal SSL Certificates without going through too much trouble while Certificate Authorities will still be able to make money by providing services to Intranet network users but in a slightly different way.
