How to Use GoDaddy Domain Name for Amazon EC2

Here are the steps on how you can make use of your domain name from GoDaddy to your website that is powered by Amazon EC2:

  • First of all, launch the EC2 instance. This can be done through aws ec2 console which can be accessed through www.console.aws.amazon.com.
  • After that, you need to set up your web server. If you are using Linux, this is referred to as the Apache. If you are using Windows Server, then this is the IIS Services. There are various instructions on how you can do this on the web.

How to Address the Very Long Amazon URLs

By now, your website must be up and running already. However, you may have to deal with a very long Amazon URL. But there is a solution to this and refer to the steps below on how to associate your domain name from GoDaddy in this instance.

  • Allocate a certain elastic IP and then associate it with your instance. Doing this is so easy and you can possibly do this through the AWS E2 console. On the part that says “networking and security”, right on the left side, click on the “elastic IPS” and then choose “allocate new address”. After that, click “associate address” and choose the instance that you have created on the first step.
  • By now, you will have that elastic IP that comes in the form of a series of numbers. Save these numbers since you will be using this at a later time.
  • After that, go to GoDaddy’s zone editor through this URL – https://dns.godaddy.com/default. You can also go here through the homepage and then refer to Domains, My Account and then Domain Management and click the DNS Manager. On that part, you will find the “edit zone”.

The final step would require associating the domain with the elastic IP. To do this, go to the Zone Editor where you will find various tables. Refer to the table that indicates “A (host)” and then look the entry with host = “@” and then click that entry in order to edit the field for “points to”.
