Installing SSL Certificate on Cisco Unity Connection

You can either create your own certificate or purchase one from a trusted Certificate Authority. Because this certificate is used in an admin session, you do not have to exclusively use a certificate that has been signed by a third party Certificate Authority. Only connections or transactions that use browsers will require such, hence, you can create your own certificate using Microsoft Certificate Server.

  • Issuing an SSL Certificate

You can use Microsoft Certificate Services or other SSL Certificate issuing application to issue your own certificate. Doing so will require you to install the certificate issuing application and reading the documentation of such an application before you can start issuing your own certificate. This will ensure that the certificate that you are going to issue will be accepted by Cisco. This will also ensure that there will be no problems with your Cisco Unity Connection once you start using the certificate to secure your sessions.

  • Uploading the Root and Server Certificates to the Cisco Connection Server

You need to sign in to Cisco Unified Operating System Administration before you can install or upload the root and server certificates. Do not use the ‘Find’ feature before you have uploaded your certificate because the search result will show a certificate that has been installed on the server that has the same name as the one that you will install on Cisco Connection Server.

After uploading the root and server certificates, you can then search for the certificate that you have issued and uploaded on the software.

After uploading both files, you need to restart the Tomcat service. You cannot restart this on the Cisco Connection Server. Hence, you need to log in using an SSH application.

  • Restarting the IMAP Server Service

After installing the Cisco Unity Connection 8.x SSL Certificate to secure client server connection, you need to restart the connection IMAP server service so that the changes will take effect.

The procedure is quite simple and you do not need to run any commands. Just log in to Cisco Unity Connection Serviceability and click on the ‘Stop’ option. Once everything has stopped, just click on the ‘Start’ option to restart the service.

Using an SSL Certificate will enable you to secure your whole connection and not just the information that you have on your server such as your login info. Because of this, you will be able to prevent third party attacks, which can save your work and intellectual property.
