  • Generate a CSR

Generate a Certificate Signing Request and make sure that you provide accurate information such as your country, state, location, organization, department, domain and your own information.

Submit it to the certificate authority where you have purchased your SSL Certificate so that you can download the copy of your SSL certificate that you will install on AWS.

  • Convert the Private Key

You should convert the private key from your certificate authority to PEM format so that Amazon will accept it. Doing so will enable you to use the private key without rekeying your certificate. You can do so by following this command:

openssl rsa -in yourdomain.key -outform PEM

  • Upload the Certificate to Amazon AWS

You can now upload the certificate on the AWS. Make sure that the certificate file that you are uploading meets the criteria that Amazon is looking for so that you would not encounter any problems during the installation of your certificates.

You should make sure that the certificate is in X.509 PEM format or it will not be accepted. Also, you should ensure that the private key matches the public key so that you will not receive their error message: “Error: Public Key Certificate and Private Key doesn’t match.”

You can upload the certificate by providing the Certificate Name, Private Key File, Public Key File and Public Key Certificate Chain File. Make sure that the files are in PEM format so that they will be accepted. Copy the contents of the files and paste the contents on the boxes provided for them.

  • Certificate Chain

Make sure that the certificate chain order is correct so that you will not receive an error message. Be sure to put the root certificate at the end of the chain so that it will be in proper order.

You can save the file and wait for the propagation to take place.

Make sure that you follow the instructions of Amazon properly so that you will be able to accurately install the certificates on AWS. Because the instructions are strict, you should follow them exactly to avoid errors.
